One of my favorite life experiences.
For a milestone birthday in the not-too-distant past, I felt like a tropical experience was in order. I was single at the time and decided I’d treat myself to a trip to Maui, which would be my first time. Living in L.A., travel was easy and reasonable. I chose to stay in a one bedroom AirBnB suite with kitchen and bath and located at a large house in Kihei, a choice that I thought might provide a more personal touch as well as connections...
The owner was kind, generous, and her backyard was a tropical paradise. She provided fresh fruit every day that was gathered from that backyard and she listened to this Hawaii newbie go on and on about the beauty she lived amid. Just a lovely place to reside for a week.
On my road trip to Hana, I stopped at the black sand beach, aka Waiʻānapana. I chatted with other sojourners and stared slack-jawed at the sights. After a bit, I hiked out to a point that allowed me to shoot back toward the beach and capture the infamous blowhole, which was pretty spectacular. Getting to that point meant hiking over the razor-sharp black volcanic rock, so sharp that it will tear up your shoes and all I had on were scuba shoes. Anyway, while on that point and before taking pictures, I just absorbed the scene and enjoyed the moment. If you’ve ever been in an environment like that, you’ll observe that growing out of that hostile and seemingly lifeless volcanic rock is the most beautiful flora. “Isn’t life amazing?”, was the thought that appeared, and I dwelled on that for a while. In so doing, I felt a deep gratitude and connection. I felt the same thing when days later I would snorkel with a sea turtle. If you haven’t and you can, you must. It’s SO peaceful.
So many precious moments during that week. I could go on and on: the dinner at Mama’s Fish House, the friend I made while at an event, who joined me one day for snorkeling. Also, the sunrise at Haleakala then mountain biking down, the road to Hana, and swimming in a waterfall-fed natural pool.
Why am I sharing this with you? Because photography is a way to connect with ourselves, others, and the world. How fortunate to have visual capsules of time that we can return to re-live those moments.
I’d like to make a connection with you and hopefully create something together. I captured over 600 images in my week on Maui and I love going through the ones that made the cut and re-experiencing that memorable time. I would be honored, truly, to be the person that provides you with your own professionally captured moments. Go to my contact page and give me a shout or just enjoy these images. I hope you do reach out so we can connect, collaborate, and create!
